Major John N. Baldwin

John N. Baldwin was born in 1934 in New York
City, attended public schools in Pelham, NY and graduated from Dartmouth College
in 1955. He studied at Cornell Medical School in NYC where he received his
MD degree in 1959. John then embarked upon an eight-year surgical training
program at The New York Hospital, finishing in heart and chest surgery at UCSF
in 1967. He was drafted and served as a Major in the U.S. Army Medical
Corps at Ft. Ord and as Chief of Surgery at the 24th Evacuation Hospital in Long
Binh, Viet Nam from 1967 to 1969. He received the Bronze Star and the Army
Commendation Medal as well as the Legion of Merit for his invaluable service in
Vietnam. Returning to Monterey, he began what became the premier vascular
surgical office on the Central Coast. He is past president of the UCSF
Surgical Society, the Sierra Medical Society, a Diplomate of the American
College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiac surgery. He was
chief consultant to the Seventh Infantry Division at Ft. Ord for twenty years.
For twelve years he was the American College of Surgeons Consultant to the White
House. Dr. Baldwin remains active in teaching as an Associate Professor of
Surgery at USUHS, Washington, DC and is active in Chapter 391, Sonora Vietnam
Veterans of America, the largest chapter in California and 8th largest in the
United States. His wife, Jeannie, was a 1st Lt. in the Army Nurse Corps
and an Operating Room Nurse at the 24th Evacuation Hospital at Long Binh.
She shares his love for VVA, his fellow veterans and his pride in our country.
Retiring in 1992, Dr. Baldwin returns to Walter Reed Hospital yearly to work in
the OR with the surgeons and casualties from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
