| U.S. Naval Advanced Tactical Support Base Moc Hoa (1968-1971) |
| This site on the Vam Co Tay River north of the Republic of
Vietnam’s Plain of Reeds, served as a naval Advanced Tactical Support
Base during the Vietnam
War. Moc Hoa sat astride an infiltration route from Cambodia that had been used by the
Viet Cong. The U.S. Navy established the staging base there for the river patrol boats
(PBR’s) units that patrolled this sector of the Vam Co Tay in Operation Giant
Slingshot. In 1969 the Navy’s Seabees deployed to the site from the Danang area and soon provided the river force with a suitable base. The naval construction men installed sleeping and messing facilities, fuel and ammunition storage, helicopter pad, defensive bunkers, and an operation center. When U.S. naval forces withdrew from South Vietnam, the Advanced Tactical Support Base at Moc Hoa was transferred in April 1971. ABM |
