For service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
For exceptionally meritorious service from 1 June 1967 to
1 September 1968 in support of allied forces in the Republic of Vietnam during
intensive and sustained combat operations against an opposing foreign force.
During this period, the ships of Task Unit 76.8.4 operated as units of the naval
gunfire support forces in the Republic of Vietnam and earned the highest praise
from all echelons of command, both afloat and ashore. While supporting United
States, Army of the Republic of Vietnam, and Republic of Korea forces in all
four Corps Tactical Zones, Task Unit 76.8.4 participated in several large and
numerous smaller operations, expending over 159,000 spin stabilized rockets,
7,000 rounds of five-inch projectiles, and 20,000 rounds of forth-millimeter
ammunition. Specifically, Task Unit 76.8.4 accounted for over 600 enemy
personnel casualties and the destruction or damage of over 6,500 enemy
structures and 718 logistics craft. Additionally, 495 secondary explosions were
obtained and countless other miscellaneous enemy targets were rendered useless.
The officers and men of Task Unit 76.8.4 displayed an operational readiness of
the highest order, thereby enabling the task unit to meet it’s numerous and
demanding commitments with a minimum of equipment casualties and an absence of
personnel casualties, although frequently subjected to hostile fire. Their
determined and inspiring efforts, exemplary performance, and unswerving
dedication were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States
Naval Service.
All personnel attached to and serving with Task Unit 76.8.4 during the above-designated period, or any part thereof, are hereby authorized to wear the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.
John H. Chafee
