The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in commending
USS GARRETT COUNTY (LST-786), USS HARNETT COUNTY (LST-821), USS
HUNTERDON COUNTY (LST-838) AND USS JENNINGS COUNTY (LST-846)

for service as set forth in the following citation:

For exceptionally meritorious service from 10 November 1966 to 30 January 1968 and from 1 March 1968 to 30 September 1968 in connection with operations against enemy aggressor forces in Southeast Asia. Participating as a unit of Commander Task Force 116 (Operations Game Warden), Task Unit 76.8.3 served as a mobile support base for river patrol boats (PBR’s) and UH-1B (Seawolf) helicopter gunships in support of friendly forces ashore along the rivers of the Mekong Delta in the Republic of Vietnam. The four ships comprising Task Unit 76.8.3 have spent in excess of 1,800 ship days on station, conducted more than 11,000 helicopter launches and landings (all accident free), originated nearly 6,400 PBR patrols, fired 475 gunfire support missions, coordinated 2,300 PBR/helicopter operations, and expended over 12,000,000 rounds of various types of ammunition. Additionally, Task Unit 76.8. 3 pursued a vigorous civic action program, providing tangible benefits to the Vietnamese people such as medical assistance and clothing, and thereby enhancing United States efforts in Southeast Asia. The professionalism, initiative, and dedication displayed by the officers and men of Task Unit 76.8.3 reflect great credit upon themselves and the United States Naval Service.

All personnel attached to and serving with Task Unit 76.8.3 during the above-designated period, or any part thereof, are hereby authorized to wear the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.
