Tan Chau was the site of a naval operating base during the Vietnam War. Located on the Mekong River on the South Vietnamese – Cambodian border. Tan Chau provided U.S. river patrol boat (PBR) units with a relatively secure haven from which to patrol the waterways of the region. The facility served as a key staging base during the Operation SEALORDS anti-Infiltration campaign of 1969-1970. The Tan Chau installation was turned over to the Vietnamese Navy in December 1970.
